Here's my take from experience working with fears and anxiety.
Rarely do I focus on the fear, anxiety or phobia itself. These are just manifestations of an overfull emotional cup. I go straight for whatever emotion is present, whatever memory needs to be worked on.
By doing this and getting an emotional release, the cup gets emptied a little. The anxiety, fear or phobia quietens down. The event or memory that gets processed may have no direct correlation with the present day fear or anxiety.
If you've tried all sorts of coping mechanisms and it doesn't work. Maybe it's time to deal with some stuff that's been swept under the carpet.
